Catholic Response to New Arianism: Jesus the Lord of History
Standing Against the “New Arianism”
“For in him dwells the whole fullness of the deity bodily” (Colossians 2:9, NABRE).
The Nicene Creed, forged in struggle and defended by saints, declares Christ “true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father.” This is not poetic ornament—it is the very spine of our faith. To confess less is to confess falsely. St. Athanasius, the great defender of Nicaea, spoke firmly:
“Those who maintain that the Son of God is a creature, or that He is not true God, are outside the faith.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “Jesus Christ is true God and true man, in the unity of his divine person” (CCC 480). This unity is the mystery of salvation. If Christ were not God, His Cross would be powerless; if He were not man, His sacrifice would not touch us. St. Augustine reminds us: “If Christ were not God, He could not be the Mediator between God and man.”
Therefore, let us be lovingly firm: Christ cannot be domesticated into a mere figure of inspiration. He is not simply admired—He is adored. He is not simply remembered—He is worshipped. He is not simply one among many—He is the Only Begotten Son, the Lord of history, the Alpha and the Omega. To dilute Him is to betray Him.
In our time, when culture seeks to tame Jesus into a safe moral exemplar, the Church must stand as witness:
“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16, NABRE).
This confession is our rock, our shield, and our song. Let us, then, with humility and courage, resist the “new Arianism.” Let us proclaim Christ crucified and risen, true God and true man. And let our lives, our worship, and even our art testify to this truth. For as St. Thomas Aquinas taught: “Only God can reconcile man to God; hence it was necessary that the Mediator be God.”
Closing Prayer
O Lord Jesus Christ,
Keep our hearts steadfast in the truth of Your divinity and humanity.
Guard us from every shadow of heresy and every temptation to diminish You.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
protect our hearts with her maternal care and purity.
St. Joseph, Guardian of the Church,
defend the heart of the Bride of Christ against all error and confusion.
Grant us courage to proclaim You,
and humility to adore You,
forever and ever. Amen.
